Introduction: Base plates are normally designed using codebase procedures (e.g. AISC-ASD). Engineers often run into situations where there are no codes available to design a particular type of a base plate or there are instances where base plate were simply over designed in the past and the engineer has to check the design of this old base plate based upon new loadings and make modifications as required. In these situations, an engineer may opt to do a finite element analysis on the base plate.
